Australian Open Gets Underway

Tennis enthusiasts know that Jan. 16, 2012 ushered in the first day of competition for the Australian Open tennis championships in Melbourne.

Denizens of Oz or those who can afford to visit can purchase tickets online or on site. If you can’t make it, it is televised. For scheduling information visit the Australian Open website at www.australianopen.com.

Aussie women fared a little better than the men in the singles competitions. In the women’s singles, Anastasia Rodionova and Ashleigh Barty succumbed to their opponents Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and Anna Tashvili of Georgia, respectively, in straight sets. On the plus side, Casey Dellacqua and Olivia Rogowska defeated their opponents Rojana Jovanoski of Serbia and Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden, respectively, also in straight sets.

In the first round of the men’s singles, American John Isner defeated Benjamin Mitchell in straight sets. Greg Jones put up quite a fight in his match against Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine, which ended with a final score of 1-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 in favor of Dolgopolov. But all was not lost – so to speak – as Bernard Tomic defeated Fernando Verdasco of Spain with a score of 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, 7-5.

The Australian Open concludes Jan. 29, 2012, so there’s plenty of time for tennis fans to buy tickets or tune in and watch their favorites in action.
