Moving can be a chaotic and stressful time, especially when handling valuable technology. Whether relocating your home or office, taking extra care with fragile items and devices is essential.

Step 1: Back up everything

Before disassembling technology, back up all data. Create copies of important files, documents, photos, and irreplaceable information using external hard drives, cloud storage, or both. This protects your data should something happen during the move.

Step 2: Organise and label cables

Use cable ties or twist ties to bundle cables neatly. Attach labels identifying which cable belongs to which device. This simple step saves considerable time and frustration during setup.

Step 3: Pack devices carefully

Use original boxes whenever possible, as they provide optimal protection with specific compartments. If unavailable, use sturdy cardboard boxes and wrap each device in bubble wrap or anti-static foam. Fill empty spaces with packing peanuts or crumpled paper for a snug fit.

Step 4: Remove ink cartridges and batteries

Remove ink cartridges before packing printers, as they can leak or dry out during transit. Also remove batteries from laptops, cameras, and remote controls to prevent accidental power-on and potential damage. Pack these items separately in sealed, labelled bags.

Step 5: Take photos of cable connections

Photograph cable connections before unplugging. This visual reference helps during setup at your new location, eliminating confusion about which cable connects where.

Step 6: Pack Wi-Fi equipment separately

Pack all network equipment, modems, routers, ethernet cables, and connectors, separately from other items. Clearly label the box Wi-Fi Equipment for easy identification and prioritised setup.

Step 7: Secure fragile screens

For devices with delicate screens like TVs or monitors, place a soft microfibre cloth over the screen and secure it with elastic bands or tape. Pack these items vertically to reduce damage risk.

Step 8: Inform the movers about fragile items

Clearly communicate with professional movers about your technology's fragile nature. Label boxes containing valuable devices as fragile and provide handling instructions to reduce accident risks.

Step 9: Test everything after the move

Once reconnected, turn devices on and test them to ensure they work properly. Internal damage may exist despite external appearances, allowing you to file claims and contact IT professionals promptly.
